Method my Madness Part 2: What TO Wear

So yesterday I wrote about how to eliminate clothing options for school/work. Today, let us focus on how to pick your perfect outfit! I truly believe that in order to be successful in school or at work, it is important to feel good, and to quote my high school basketball coach, Ted Jolley (he also preformed our wedding service), “Look sharp, feel sharp, play sharp.” Clothing is so important, for both men and women. People judge you (whether it is right or wrong) based on how you look and how you present yourself. I understand that we all don’t have the same budget, but I think that you can look good on any budget, and I plan on writing future posts on how to find AMAZING clothes on the cheap! But let’s get back to the task at hand:

Here is my method:

1.  Choose your main piece. This could be anything: a dress, skirt, shirt, shoes, earrings, ANYTHING! This is what you are going to base your whole outfit on, and it should be the easiest part of this process.

2. Find complimentary items. To do this I always abide by a few basic rules:

            - Don’t be too matchy-matchy- Blue shirt with blue pants looks a little like a jump-suit. There is nothing that I love more than finding a pair of earrings or shoes that match a shirt or skirt that I have, but use caution when there are too many like colors.

            - Match your shoes with your belt- I don’t think there is anything worse than a brown belt with white shoes! It drives me crazy when I see this! Whenever I mention this, I always have some people (mostly females) that say something like "well I don't really wear belts." That is fine, just match your shoes to something that you are wearing (preferably your pants, shirt, or purse).

            - Know your body- I do not look good in skinny jeans. I have not seen many girls that do, in fact. They tend to highlight if your thighs are a bit curvier, and make a woman look disproportionate. As my husband would say, “it magnifies a pear shape.” I think it is important to only wear clothes that make you look and feel good. If you feel self-conscious wearing something, you probably have no business wearing it.

             - Add color- Color is one way to make yourself look brighter, and in turn, happier. When you wear just black or gray, that is when people as you questions like: “what’s wrong,” or “you look tired.” Not exactly a compliment. If you enjoy wearing neutrals, maybe just pick a bright accessory.

            - Don’t wear brown with black- This is arguable for some, but it is something that I am just not comfortable with. I have tried it before, but it just felt like I picked my outfit out in the dark. It may work for some, but not me.

 3. Only wear shoes you can walk in. Enough said.

4. If it is warm out, always bring a light sweater to combat the air-conditioned buildings. (Trust me, I lived through a Phoenix summer!). Check out some cute options here.

Hope that helps!

Enjoy your day!

What is your go-to outfit when you are in a hurry? Can you pull off black and brown together?
